Definition: Crochet

Crochet is a process of creating textiles by using a crochet hook to interlock and loop thread, or strands of other materials. The name is derived from the French term crochet, meaning ‘hook’. Hooks can be made from a variety of materials, such as metal, wood, bamboo, bone or plastic.

The oldest form of crochet is slip-stitch crochet, but that is a term we use today. It was known as “shepherd’s knitting” in the British Isles and had other names in other languages.

Crocheted fabric is begun by placing a slip-knot loop on the hook (though other methods, such as a magic ring or simple folding over of the yarn may be used), pulling another loop through the first loop, and repeating this process to create a chain of a suitable length. The chain is either turned and worked in rows, or joined to the beginning of the row with a slip stitch and worked in rounds. Rounds can also be created by working many stitches into a single loop. Stitches are made by pulling one or more loops through each loop of the chain. At any one time at the end of a stitch, there is only one loop left on the hook. Tunisian crochet, however, draws all of the loops for an entire row onto a long hook before working them off one at a time. Like knitting, crochet can be worked either flat (back and forth in rows) or in the round (in spirals, such as when making tubular pieces).

History of Crochet

Research shows that crochet originated in Arabia, then spread eastward and westward on Arab trade routes to other Mediterranean lands. Other research indicates that crochet comes from indigeno us tribes in South America.

It was used in 17th century French lacemaking, where the term crochetage designated a stitch used to join separate pieces of lace. The word crochet subsequently came to describe both the specific type of textile, and the hooked needle used to produce it.Both knitting and Crochet were born from a technique called Nålebinding, which literally means “binding with a needle” in Danish. The oldest known example of Nålebinding is believed to date back to 6500 BC.

Crochet, however, remains one of the few crafts that still require direct human in volvement. The intricacy of a crochet stitch is impossible to be copied by a machine. The technique and dexterity that is required for crochet is not something that machines can authentically replicate.

The modern crochet hook originated in the 1830s in England, where the modern art of crochet was perfected. Previous iterations of the crochet hook included the flat hook used in shepherd’s knitting and the hooked needle in tambour embroidery, both of which had existed for a long time. Crochet became popular as a needle art in the 1840s. The earliest crochet hooks had removable needles. Crochet needles were made in Redditch, England, using the same techniques used to make sewing needles and fishing hooks. The needles were handmade of wrought iron and then the iron was converted to steel.

Knitted fabric can be smoother and stretchier than crochet fabric. Crochet fabric is often highly textured, and a bit sturdier than knitted fabric. Both crafts can be used to make a variety of projects, from garments to home decor. Both crafts are a great way to relax and unwind Several studies have shown that knitting and crochet can postpone agerelated memory loss. The crafts can also be soothing for those people who are already experiencing signs dementia. Crocheting helps neurodivergent students, and youth and adults deal with ADHD, stress, anxiety, and depression.
